Oval Tablecloths

Oval tablecloths are a great shape to add depth and symmetry to a surface. Placing this shape of covering on an oval or square surface adds an instant layering effect to the room. Usually, they are used on oval surface, round tables with leaves, and square tables with leaves. However, depending on your artistic sensibility, you may find it appropriate to use oval tablecloths on many other shaped surfaces.

Whatever your choice, the first step to making sure you purchase the proper size is measuring the surface of the table. You may not want to put a 60 x 90 oval tablecloth on a 52 x 70 table because it would be too large! Alternatively, you might want it to hang over the edges of the surface and this size would be appropriate. Either way, you will want to make sure that the covering will fit as you expect it to. If it’s to show the surface around the edges, you want a covering that’s smaller than the table. (So, you very well might want to put a 52 x 70 oval tablecloth on a 60 x 90 table).

To take an accurate measurement, you need a tape measure that will not scratch the surface and a paper and pen to write down measurements. You will also need to measure the “drop”; that is, the length of tablecloth that will hang over the edge of the surface.

Oval Tablecloths

To measure a rectangular surface, measure the longest edge (length) of the surface and the shortest edge (width). To measure a round surface or square surface simply measure diameter (the length of the table through the center) or the length of one side of a square table. Measure an oval table as you would a rectangle table, but measure through the diameter both in length and width. The drop is up to you, but as a guide: A standard drop is ten to twelve inches and a formal drop is fifteen inches. Write the drop number down on the paper. (If you don’t wish to have a drop at all, simply use zero here).

Now you are ready to determine the size of the oval tablecloth. Multiply the drop length times 2 and add that number to the width to determine the width of the table cloth. For rectangle and oval surfaces, multiply the drop length times 2 and add that number to the length to get the length of the tablecloth. For square and round tables: multiply the drop times 2 and add to the diameter. Round table cloths are sold as diameter by drop.
